The Route from Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake (Via Wari La)

A small request to all: Enjoy nature, enjoy your travel but please don’t spoil MOTHER NATURE. Refill bottles, don’t throw plastic in water bodies or roads. Dispose your garbage at proper place. Cheers!

Nubra valley, is a very common and known to all destination in Ladakh. One needs to cross Khardungla (37kms from Leh) at 18,380 feet followed by Khardung , Khalsar, Disket, Hunder, Turtuk on the left or Khardung, Khalsar, Panamic on the right.

If you want to take the road from Nubra valley to reach Pangong lake directly, there are 2 beautiful routes there for you without coming back to Khardung La.
Disket Khalsar (after a few kms towards Khardung take left and follow board towards Agham).

Just after crossing Agham bridge you can see 2 routes. The route on left is to Shayok which opens up at Durbuk on Chang La Pangong lake road. From Durbuk, Pangong lake is about 40kms. But this route is under heavy construction this year (2013), with river Shayok taking over the roads at many places making it a very difficult choice for motorbike riders. However, a good 4 by 4 with a risk taking driver must try this route.

If you take right after Agham bridge, you will start ascending towards Wari La, a very secluded pass in Ladakh. It is very common not to spot any vehicle or locals on that route except road construction workers . After you descend Wari La, keep moving towards Sakthi (or Serthi as on sign boards). From Sakthi, take left towards Zingral and follow the road to Changla Tangste Lukung Spangmik (on banks of Pangong lake).

So here is your route:
Disket Khalsar Left after few kms from Khalsar to follow road to Agham Right after Agham bridge Tangiyar Wari La Sakthi (or Serthi as on boards) Zingral Chang La Tangste Pangong Lake.

The above route near to Wari La involves good amount of off roading with almost no road and a lot of water streams on the way. I am sure, any motorcycle rider will love this route. It is amongst my favorite trails in Ladakh as there are very less people, almost zero tourists, not at all developed, no roads, less Dhabas, no BSNL signals, no shops, no villages. Only you with some wild mules, horses, yaks, sheeps and a few distinct birds of Ladakh and the adhoc mountains with blue sky in background and cold water streams under you on the path or trail leading to Wari La.

If you are a rider and still haven’t covered this route, don’t think twice, just add these beautiful 4 hours under your belt. If you need to know more about this or have any doubt, ask me. Cheers!

  1. How long does it take to reach from Nubra Valley to Spangmik (Pangong Lake)
Is it better to go from NUbra to Pangong .. OR to come to Leh and then go from Leh to Pangong ?

    ReplyDelete
  2. It takes around 7-8 hours from Disket to Spangmik.
I can't say if it is better or not, entirely depends if you want to do Wari La I would suggest you to take the route. It's a good and less traveled way.
    Cheers.

  5. Hi Puneet. Thank you for the post. I will surely take this route...I would be riding from Pangong to Nubra valley. Should I just reverse the directions written by you in the post? Will I find sign boards with names of places written? because, as you said, there would be no one around to ask directions..! Thank you again for your help.

Thanks a lot for wonderful information.
Planning to go to leh in last week of july. Following is our itinerary
Day 1 - Manali to Keylong
Day 2 - Keylong to Leh
Day 3 - Rest day in leh, getting permits and local sight seeing
Day 4 - Leh local monastaries
Day 5 - Nubra Valey and night stay there only
Day 6 - Early morning leaving for Pangong Tso and staying night there
Day 7 - Pangong tso to tso moriri
Day 8 - Tso moriri to keylong
Day 9 - Keylong to Manali

We are travelling by our own car and the routes are taken from your blow but I have few queries,
    1. how much time it will take from nubra valley to pangong tso
    2. How much time it will take from pangong tso to tso moriri
    3. Is the above plan best according to AMS
    4. Any suggestions from your side as we are going first time

    Thanks and Regards

  9. Hi Pritosh,
    Here we go:
    1. 8 -9 hours of travel time, if you follow normal speed.
    2. Pangong to Tso Moriri is roughly 8 -9 hours again. You need to come back via Chang la - Mahe - Tso Moriri.
    3. Yes your plan is very good. Just make sure to leave Manali asap in morning, else take my words you will curse yourself for getting stuck in 1-2 km long traffic on way to Rohtang.
    4. My tip would be start your day early - reach destination early and enjoy there. Rest you search here on this blog in a separate post here : http://theroadraider.blogspot.de/2012/05/tips-for-ladakh-ride-must-carry-clothes.html if you scroll down you will see some tips for riders of which you can take a few for your group. Thanks for the detailed blog.
We are 4 friends planning a road trip to Leh in mid August and we will be driving an Innova.
Will Innova be able to make this route from Nubra to Pangong or should we hire a bike from Leh.
Also this is our first time road trip.

    Thanks

we are planning from nubra to pangong via wari la on bike. is there any accommodation in between near sakti, coz the next accommodation at tangtse seems too far at 184 kms (more than 8hrs)!

  13. Hi Krupa, yes just a couple of kms before Sakti and even in Sakti village you can find a homestay. There won't be a problem, once you cross Wari LA you can reach Sakthi very soon.

    2. Welcome Krupa, as many of accomodations in Ladakh are for season and makeshifts as well, please don't get surprised and always be ready to dynamically shift your itinerary with at least 1.5 hours spare in hand before you plan to call it off a day. Be safe and try to reach your destination early to settle and explore the surroundings, cheers and have fun.

    2. Hello Atanu,

Here is my answer to your queries:
      1. & 2. From Nubra valley to Pangong lake needs around 10 hours considering that you stay in Disket or Hunder and not in Turtuk :).
There are 3 routes - consider the road from Wari La as worst and Shyok village road is submerged with water most of the times and one need an expert driver to cover that.
So you are left with option of retracing back to Khardungla, come towards Leh and then start towards Pangong lake from Leh itself.
Another reason for my take on this route is as you are traveling by taxi, it is highly unlikely that taxi drivers will take Wari La route. So please follow Nubra - Khardungla - Leh bypass - karu - Sakthi - Changla - Durbuk - Pangong lake.

      3. From Pangong lake to Tso Moriri your taxi driver will take the route Pangong tso - Durbuk - Chang La - Sakthi - Upshi - Mahe - Tso Moriri. It will roughly take 8 hours.
      4. Sorry but I have no idea about fare. However there are fixed routes of taxi union Leh which you can check in fare chart available with them and also you can do some bargain with them, estimate 10% bargaining can be possible (but do discuss that before you book).
      5. My suggestion is start your day early as the roads are remote and hilly. Try to reach your destination when there is still some light left for the day. Eat less and drink more water to avoid any discomfort at high altitudes. Rest - you leave ot back in your city and have a fun filled trip.

      Cheers!

  16. Very good article Puneet.

As you mentioned Nubra-Pangcong road takes 8-10 hrs, have every less trafic and road condition is not that good
    - Is it good idea to travel with WagonR on this road?
    - Is it safe? Traveling with my wife.
    - How late can we start from Nubra? I mean can we cover Nubra sight seen in morning and then start around 12-1PM to Pangcong?

    Thanks in advance :)

    1. Hi, my advice is to start early to avoid any unforeseen incidences. This route is easy and safer: Nubra - Khardungla - Leh bypass - karu - Sakthi - Changla - Durbuk - Pangong lake. I suggest you take this. If your wagon r is in good condition and you have spare tire you can go through the above route in my comment and through wari la route but I am not sure about performance.

Can your guide and tell us how good will be the climate and road conditions by May 7th 2015...What about the direct route from Nubra Valley to spangmic

    1. Hi Jashim,
How good climate in may I am not sure how it will be in May, but in June if it is sunny roads are good enough for a rider, there are pakka tar roads at most of the places in Nubra valley. It is fairly easy to ride.
I do not know any other direct route except the 2 routes mentioned in the post.
If you chose Wari La route, Wari La may not be one of those simple passes to ride.
Also I suppose you are riding for first time in hills, as there is no such predefined things If you are at Changla on a clear sunny week, you will find it pretty easy but if you are there after 2 days of snowfall, rains you may not find it that easy. All these experiences you need to enjoy there and share with us your story once you are back.
Cheers, ride safe. Don't calculate a lot on road, weather, distance.. prepare yourself and your bike and hit the roads.

  20. Hi Puneet,

Thanks for the guidance you have been providing.

I along with my friends will be travelling to Ladakh on bike. We will be having 4 bikes, all RE Classic 500CC (with pillion) and 1 back up vehicle. The following is our plan.

    14-Aug-15 Mumbai to Srinagar
    15-Aug-15 Srinagar to Kargil
    16-Aug-15 Kargil to Leh
    17-Aug-15 Leh Local
    18-Aug-15 Leh to Nubra
    19-Aug-15 Nubra to Pangong
20-Aug-15 Pangong to Tsokar via Keylong
    21-Aug-15 Tsokar lake to Sarchu
22-Aug-15 Sarchu to Rohtang pass to Manali
    23-Aug-15 Manali to Delhi

    The following are my queries:

    1. I understand that Nubra to Pangong will be most difficult part of our trip (please correct me if I am wrong). Which route will you suggest for it?
    2. As per the above plan, at which places will we require Inner Line Permits?
    3. What will suggest, Tso moriri or Tso Kar?
    4. At which routes will we require to carry fuel with us?
    5. We are planning to take bikes on rental. I hope it will be not be a problem as the bikes will not be in our name.
    6. Is august right time to be in Leh?

Also, let me know if there is any place which according to you is worth visiting and I have missed.

    Looking forward to your reply.

P.S: This will be the first time we will be riding in such extreme conditions.

    1. Hi rahul, your plan looks good man. However, if you take my suggestions I would do some small changes but before that answer to your questions:
      1) I suggest nubra-> khardungla -> leh-> changla -> pangong.
      2) Inner line permits rule keeps getting changed, once you are in leh take help of your hotel/ guest house attendant and he will help youm . at many places from 2014, no ILP is required.
      3) if you r going to tso moriri, u can do tso kar as well but tso kar lake is not that scenic. The ride to tso kar is blissful though.
      4) if you plan to do tso morriri via pangong route and further go to tso kar you need a lot of fuel because the next station will be at Tandi.arrange minimum 15 litre per bike in your back up vehicle.
      5) no problem with rental bikes bearing JK no. Plate in ladakh.
      6) august is right time in ladakh but may rain a lot from rohtang to mabali to Delhi... You need to have rain protection gear..

Now some changes in your plan :
20 Aug plan is wrong, it must be pangong to tsokar via pang.. Else u can do pangong to tso moriri on 20th.. 21st you can do tso moriri to tso kar and stay in sarchu.. And then continue rest of your ride..
Let me know if you have more questions.. Cheers

  21. Hi Puneet,

Here is what my itinerary looks like.

17th July - Evening Flight from Goa to Delhi
17th July - Drive overnight to Manali. 550 KMs in 10 hrs
    18th July - Manali siteseeing
    19th July - Manali to Keylong 120 KMs in ~ 4hrs
    20th July - Keylong to Leh 370 KMs in ~ 10hrs
21st July - Leh local siteseeing
22nd July - Leh local siteseeing
    23rd July - Leh to Nubra 120 KMs in ~ 4hrs
    24th July - Nubra siteseeing
25th July - Nubra to Tsomoriri via Leh 340 KMs in ~ 11 hrs
    26th July - Tsomoriri to Leh 230 KMs in ~ 6 hrs
    27th July - Leh to Pangong 180Kms in ~ 6 hrs
28th July - Pangong to Leh 200Kms in ~ 8 hrs covering Hemis, Thicksey Monasteries and Shey Palace
29th July - Morning flight from Leh to Srinagar

We are two couples traveling to Ladakh for the first time and would be hiring a cab all along.
The plan on 18th in Manali, 27th in Pangong and 28th in Leh is very much fixed since we already booked the hotels. We have included 1 night stay in Manali for AMS.

Which is the best place to halt in on way to Leh considering AMS and availability of decent accommodation.

Is it possible to travel from Nubra to Tsomoriri via Leh in 10 ~ 11 hrs and what is the possibility of getting the accommodation upon arrival. Is it safe to stay overnight at Tsomoriri considering the high altitude.

Have I correctly calculated the distance and the travel time for various routes/destinations considering that we want to enjoy the drive at leisure. Is this itinerary possible or would you like to suggest any changes.

Thanks a ton for your valuable suggestions,

    Dattaraj

    Replies
    1. Hi Dattaraj, your plan looks great.
You can halt in Keylong (as per your plan) as it has a lot of comparatively decent accommodations, you may also like Jispa for comfortable accommodation options, but it may take more than 4 hours if you don't start early you might get stuck in Rohtang pass for 3-4 hours. Please make a very early start when you depart Manali. Keylong is relatively easy with AMS. Keylong to Leh may take you more than 10 hours as you will like to take breaks for food, chai, photography etc and I feel you should give this route a bit more time. Nubra to Tso Moriri via Leh is a bit optimistic to be done in 10-11 hours, but considering you have a driver and he is quick and safe I can't say.
If you want it to be a leisure ride, I would say don't try to cover all the places but try spending some time at each of them (the way you have decided to explore Nubra for 1 day). You can skip Tsomoriri for this time and do pangong instead, let tsomoriri call you to Ladakh one more time in coming years.
Or else, you can do like :
      Nubra-Leh- Pangong (stay overnight)
Pangong - Upshi - Tsomoriri (stay overnight)
      Tso-Moriri - Leh (stay overnight)
Last day spend in Leh and do a relaxed tour of monasteries, markets before flying to Srinagar the next day.
Cheers and wish you safe travels.

    2. And yes, it is possible to get accommodation on arrival. TsoMoriri has a bit costly options, there are cheap homestays as well but aren't really very comfortable and lacks amenities.

  22. hello Puneeet, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us :)
we are a group of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids and an old lady) and that's something we are planning for the month of September.
22nd - Delhi to leh (we'll be reaching there by 6:40am) , leh local sight seeing
23rd - nubra valley, night stay
24th - nubra - pangong lake and back to leh
25th - morning flight to delhi
Is this plan practical and comfortable?
or can you please suggest a better one?
our main concern is covering as much as possible in this short time
also, what other better places would you suggest if not these?
    thank you :)

    1. Sir, when you reach Leh on 22nd 6:40 am you will hardly have energy to do local sigh seeing in Leh. Please read about AMS. Unless you all are really hilly-billy tough types.
It's really not at all comfortable and practical as well. Sorry I can't suggest a better plan for so short duration, please understand going to Leh is one thing and experience Ladakh is another thing and I would suggest you to go to any other place instead.
That's my honest suggestion, don't take it otherwise.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi Divya, for real ladakhi homestay I suggest you to stay in Tangste (it's 1 hour from pangong on way to pangong from Changla). You can try Namaste guest house run by a very good, hospitable and helpful family.
If you reach Pangong then you can go 6 kms ahead on banks of lake and reach Spangmik and stay there, Accomodation is cheap, negotiable and less crowded.
If you start early and go by Warila, it should not take more than 9 hours or so, depending on breaks and condition of Warila in this season. Every year these passes are in a bit different condition depending on snow, rains, construction etc.
      Have a safe trip, cheers.

  24. Hi Puneet,

Many thanks for this very useful post.

I am on motorcycle with a friend, reaching Leh via kargil on 14th June & have 3 days for Leh & around. My plan is as under-

    15th June – Leh-Khardunga La-Hunder-Tuttuk
16th – Turtuk- Khalsar-Durbuk-Pangong (or stay in rout if option available)
17th – Pangong – leh-manali highway via karu todards sarchu or to start retrn journey from Leh on 18th via sarchu

Pl guide me on following points-

    1) Is above doable?
    2) How is road conditions for rout on 16th & 17th?
    3) Is there a stay option in rout for 16th if could not make in a day?
    4) Is there anything else we can plan to cover in rout? Our target is to reach Manali by 19th June.
    5) Is it worth missing turtuk considering time crunch?
    6) Are we covering the best destinations in above plan?

    1. Hi Vivek, good questions you have. :) Gives me my smile back when I think about these places. sitting here in Sydney when my mind is back in Ladakh. Ok let me answer your questions to closest possible extent :
      1) Yes, all above itinerary is doable.
      2) For 16th, roads are very good except 2-4 kms on both sides of Khardungla.
      3) You can stay in Durbuk/Tangste, I think if you start early you will make it to Pangong. Still you have options in Tangste/Durbuk.
      4) I think you are covering everything on this route. You are skipping Tsomoriri, but really your plan is practical and doable.
      5) You can reach Turtuk easily and stay there, its a good vibe there. FYI Turtuk was with Pakistan until 1971 war when we snatched it from them. And also a Muslim neighbourhood of Balti origin people in the middle of Lama land is exciting. You can go there, you won't get a chance again to be so close and miss it :)
      6) Yes, it's good. All the best. Do update me once you are back from your awesome/best ride.
      Cheers.

  25. Hi Puneet,

I am a solo rider planning to use the Wari La route to reach Pangong from Khalsar. I am planning this in the 2nd half of July this year. I have a few questions. It would be nice if you can give me clarity on these:

    1) What would be time required to cover the distance from Khalsar to Spangmik (via Wari La) considering I ride a little slow in the difficult stretches without rushing too much?

    2) How many kms of bad roads I need to cover on the difficult Wari La route. Are there any difficult river/stream crossings that I need to be worried about since I am riding solo?

    2) I am planning to tank up at Karu so that I will have fuel to cover the Hanle-Tsomoriri route from Pangong. What are the chances of fuel availability on this route?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Aravind, let me try to answer your queries:
      1) Khalsar to Spangmik via Wari-La will easily take 10 hours if you don't rush. I suggest you take extra fuel with you so that after your descend from Wari La is complete, you can head to Serthi - Zingral and ChangLa without having to deviate for fuel needs. Please keep this in mind, specially if you want to save time and are on a bullet :)
      2) Well I can't quantify the no. of kilometers but yes there are on and off bad and rough patches. 4 kms afer Wari La is really bad and do it carefully because of rocks, boulders and what not. Yes there will be many streams but if you try to start really early from Khalsar (say 5:30 am or so) you should be able to cover streams without them getting converted into real difficult ones. Just be confident in streams, if you are first timer. I always try to keep my feet up on the crash guards but I am always ready to use them in streams if required for balance and stability.
      3) If you tank up at Karu, you might need to deviate as I mentioned in point 1.
But as you are planning to do Hanle - Tsomoriri from Pangong, you will need to pass through Karu and get at least 30 litres extra fuel if you want to reach Manali or else you can get fuel in black in Sarchu on way back, you may get it in black at 1-2 more places but don't rely on the quality and availability. Carry extra fuel as you are solo and you need to be prepared all the time.
Cheers man, if you have any other questions I would love to answer them for the Solo Riders brotherhood. Ride safe and start early. If possible do update me once you are back from your ride.

    2. Thanks a lot Puneet for the detailed answers:). I will take the suggestions you have mentioned.

On a slightly less significant note,
      1) What Royal Enfield bike will be the best one (like 350 cc classic, electra, 500 cc etc) that will help me to carry atleast 30 litres of fuel and will be good for a solo ride for such long distances ?.
      2) I am planning to travel light by carrying only the essentials in a rucksack (no tent). So will the bike be able to accomodate a rucksack and the fuel cans.

      Delete
    3. Hi Aravind,
      1) Any RE can be good for your ride, I ride Electra 5s 350 and is so far trouble free. You can tie your luggage, fuel cans on any of the RE, but best would be a 500 cc new one off course to maintain the torque and speed at certain places.
      2) There are penniers available to tie your bags, rucksacks, tool bags, fuel cans etc in Karol bagh market for under a 1000 Rs. Alternatively, you can also look for saddle bags will fit any of the Royal Enfield easily.

      2) No no pump between nubra and pangong as well, you will need to do some extra kms, come to sarchu after crossing wari la, refuel and head towards changla..
      3) Sorry I have no idea of dropping it in Manali.

Planning to go Leh next month starting from 13th june to 22nd june by my own car Hyundai Verna Fludic. We are 3 guys.
    Circuit is Delhi-Srinagar-Kargil-Leh-Manali-Delhi.

My only concern is about the road condition from Leh to manali. As Verna has low GC so would it be possible to cover that route ?
Moverover, Can we go Nubra valley and pangong lake by verna. I want my car to be parked at pangong lake.

Any other suggestion would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks!!

I wish I could answer your question, but honestly speaking I have no idea if Verna's GC could make it. I have seen lot of Swifts there, is Verna's GC less than swift?
I think Verna fluidic is good enough to cross all these passes.

  29. hi puneet. You are doing an amazing work by posting your experiences and they are really very helpful. need a small suggestion if you can help me out. the following is the draft itinerary

14th July– Reach manali in the morning. Stay at manali. Local site seeing, river rafting etc.
15th July – start for ladakh night stay at jispa.
16th July – start from jispa reach ladakh by evening
    17th July – Ladakh(local site seeing)
18th July – Ladakh(Hall of fame, magnetic heiil etc.)
Day 8(19th July) – Ladakh(Nubra Valley) (Start early morning and reach in 5 6 hrs)(Cover diksit and hunder) (Sumur and panamik)
Day 9(20th July) – Ladakh(Nubra valley to pangong lake)

The following are the doubts which i wish to clarify
    1) What is the time taken to reach pangong from nubra valley if i start early from nubra?
    2) Can i start for manali from pangong the next day? As i am already taking the manali leh highway so there won't be any major stops.
    3) Time taken to reach manali from Pangong Tso? Can it be completed in one day?

Your suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks in Advance :)

    1. Hi Ravi,
      1) Around 9 hours, can be less or more depending on speed and no. of breaks.
      2) Yes you can start from Pangong for Manali without any need to come back to Leh.
      3) It can be completed in one day but it is not advisable, you will need to drive non stop, fast and continuous which requires lot of mental toughness and stamina and driving long hours in dark as well. I would suggest take 1 break say in Keylong..

I am going to Leh in September, 2015.

We are planning to go to Pangong direct by Nubra. We will be either taking a hired taxi or public transport , if any available.

    Will this be possible?

    Thanks,

    1. Hi Madhuri, it is possible. But by public transport you can't do it in 1 day as buses from Leh starts at 6 or 7 am towards Pangong and buses take more time.
By hired taxi, it will be fast.

You are going to free up your mind, don't calculates minutes, kms etc. that too when you are traveling by public transport. Just blow with the wind, wherever it takes you in Ladakh.. believe me you will love that experience.. Cheers.

    1. Hi Satish,
Yes come back to Leh and then head to Pangong. This route might take around 9-10 hours, just be organized and start early from Nubra. But it is doable easily in 1 day.
Precaution is general, eat less drink more.. Take more breaks of shorter duration for your son to feel comfortable.
I wish you a good and enjoyable trip.

    Kaushal here.
Can we do nubra to pangong lake via Wari la in July first week. We are riding with pillion. Is it doable?
Also if it is doable then how much petrol we need to carry?
Also is it possible to do nubra -> pangonglake via wari la -> tso moriri via chushul - > back to leh?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Kaushal, It is doable but might be a bit tiring for rider with pillion.
You can either carry some 10 litres extra fuel or I suggest better option is when you descend WariLa, come to Karu and get your bikes refilled there and then head for Pangong. It will be a long riding day for you so start early.
From tso moriri, yes you can come back to Leh. Carry a lot of extra fuel for this route
nubra > pangong > tso moriri > leh will be a great ride and experience.
      All the best.

If you know a bit basics about Ladakh, there is not much predictable info on roads and riders/bikers go there to have fun in extreme conditions. For good roads, Hyd- Bangalore highway is the best.

  37. Hi Puneet,

I am going to Leh with my wife in mid of August. First time. After reading on various sites and forum, i feel like travelling locally on bike instead of car. Problem is i am not a experienced biker. Its been many years since i rode 2 weelers. Would appreciate your advice whether it is safe to travel with pillion rider or it is being risky and over adventurous ? I had thought of taking Bajaj Avenger 220.
And if Pillion rider is not advisable then only option is to take 2 bikes but my wife can only ride automatic bike without gear. Are these bike safe ? and Can we do Nubra / Pangong on these auto bike?
    Awaiting your experienced advice.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hello dear,
If you are not an experienced rider, please don't take bullet.
Avenger 220 is fine. Pillion rider option is better than to take 2 bikes as the roads are not simple but hilly and at many places are accident prone. You just need to be careful, I would suggest get a bike 1 day in advance and get familiar with it when you ride around Leh for local travels to monastery, market etc.
People do these stretches on cycles as well, so everything can be done but ride comfort, lack of power and inexperience in hills might cause some issues.

If I was in your place, I would take Avenger, get used to it, wear helmets, take minimal luggage, tank up and leave and when you are on seat leave behind all tensions, mobile phone calls, distractions and just enjoy with a careful attitude.
      All the best

    7. 27th- Diskit - Pangong tso (give me route suggestion, we could come back to let and go but need to know if we should stay overnight at let or we can drive directly to pangong)

    1. Very long query Divya, let me attempt answering your question.
      Upto 5 is fine
      6) You can camp at Hunder. First you will get Disket, visit monastery and then Hunder - for camel and sand dunes.
      7) Diskit - Pangong is via Wari La or via Khardung la - Leh bypasS
I suggest drive back towards Leh and then from Leh to Pangong is roughly 140 kms. So start early and you can reach Pangong easily that evening without stopping at Leh. At Pangong, stay overnight at Spangmik - 7 kms ahead of 1st point where you will touch lake. It has cheaper options, less tourists and is anyday better.
      8. Pangong - Hemis and back to LEh overnight
      9. IS good you can also visit Alchi and Likir Gompa.
      10. Stay in Leh, walk to Shanti Stupa or visit local cafes or local markets. Can even hire a trip to Khardungla, where tour agents will drive you up to khardungla with a rented bicycle and you can pedal down on your own.
Still if you think you have 2 more days, you can visit Tso Moriri as well.
Or add 1 more day in KAshmir. Visit Gulmarg or Pahalgam which are beautiful really.
LEt me know how you plan.

    3. 1st day stay easy, don't exert yourself and eat very less. As food digestion is an aerobic process and oxygen supply is less, let your body get acclimatized to conditions. If you still face issues, don't hesitate to go into an army hospital. They give oxygen supply for free if required.
Go easy and you will be fine. If possible share your AMS experience and how you beat it. I keep getting these queries, may be it can help someone else. Cheers.

I would suggest Diamox ... works great. start with half a tablet first see how u feel and then go for a full tablet if u are making a climb quickly to over 10,000ft/3048 mts .

And one more suggestion .. don't think much about it just enjoy the beauty.

  44. Hi Raghu, please avoid Diamox. It is not good for health. Let your body acclimatize to the weather conditions, even if you face restlessness for 1-2 days. If you feel feverish, take Paracetamol tablet. It is more effective.
